The Kansas City Royals finished the home portion of their 2014 schedule with a 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers Sunday afternoon. They did it in front of a sellout crowd to push their season total to roughly 43,000 fans shy of the 2 million mark.
The charged-up atmosphere didn’t go unnoticed from those taking the field. Royals outfielder Alex Gordon says the players enjoyed the sellout crowds over the weekend.
“It was cool,” said Gordon. “The whole weekend they came out and supported us, so even after two losses, two tough losses, they came back on a Sunday with football going on and came out and supported us. That means a lot for us to play in front of something like that and give us a lot of energy.”
The Royals haven’t drawn 2,000,000 fans since 1991 and this year they came the closest to reaching that plateau since then.
Whether or not the Royals have at least one more home date for a playoff game will be determined in the next seven days. They finish a game that was suspended in Kansas City because of rain tonight in Cleveland, then play three more full games there before moving on to Chicago for a four-game series.
