Public Art in Johnson County

Johnson County, Kansas continues to expand by about 10 percent each year. And arts advocates say that with this growth, more attention should be paid to the arts. By Laura Spencer

Kansas City, MO – Johnson County Community College Gallery of Art/Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art and the Arts Council of Johnson County today bring together a panel of experts from around the country for a symposium called Quality and Politics in Public Art. KCUR?s Laura Spencer talked with Johnson County Arts Council President Larry Meeker who says public art can be an inexpensive way for communities to define themselves, although not without controversy.

The Arts Council of Johnson County and the Johnson County Community College Gallery of Art/Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art host a second in a series of symposiums on Arts and Economic Development. The focus of the January 24 Symposium is ?Quality & Politics in Public Art,? from 4 to 6 pm at JCCC, Polsky Theatre, Carlsen Center.

Also today, An Insiders Guide to the Arts Community from 6 to 8 pm at the Kansas City Art Institute. This is an opportunity to learn the ins and outs on public arts, the art media, exhibiting, and galleries from individuals in the field who are working artists themselves. Presenters are Porter Arneill, Marcus Cain, and Sherry Leedy.
