The south side of the metro is growing on both sides of stateline. The Mid America Regional Council reports that in 2000 some 7,000 workers commuted between northern Cass County and Johnson County. Right now, there's no main thoroughfare between the two areas, forcing many travelers use 135th Street or go north to I-435. MARC's Director of Transportation Mell Henderson says the study will look at ways the area may develop in the future.
Mell Henderson: "So as planners, we're just trying to be prudent to understand what the future needs may be and ensure that we're making decisions today that will preserve those options for the future."
Henderson says the study is in its early stages and will not wrap up for at least a year.
