By Laura Spencer

Kansas City, MO – The Metropolitan Kansas City Performing Arts Center launched a new grassroots community initiative on Monday called the Hands-on Campaign in an effort to tap into public dollars. KCUR's Laura Spencer reports.

With 65 million dollars to go toward raising its goal of 326 million, the Performing Arts Center is moving into a new phase. Fundraising Chair Jan Kreamer says a team of about 75 community ambassadors has volunteered for the Hands-On Campaign, to raise money and develop audiences.

Jan Kreamer: They really want the Performing Arts Center to be a community center...and if that's going to occur..the time is now to really start building that constituency.

An October groundbreaking is scheduled for the complex at 16th and Broadway, which features a 1600 seat symphony hall, an 1800 seat hall for opera and ballet, and a 250 seat celebration hall. The Performing Arts Center is scheduled to open in 2009. Laura Spencer, KCUR News.
