Questions for 'Ask a Mexican' Columnist

By Sylvia Maria Gross

Kansas City, MO – It's the face of a fat, mustached man with a gold tooth and a sombrero, but it doesn't look much like the Mexican who writes the weekly column in the Pitch, Ask A Mexican. Gustavo Arellano is actually Mexican American, and he's a slim guy who wears hip, black-rimmed glasses. Arellano was an investigative reporter for Orange County's OC Weekly, where the editor-in-chief first came up with the idea for the column in 2005.

The Pitch, which is also owned by the New Times chain of alternative weeklies, started carrying it in May of 2006. Arellano recently compiled a book with his Ask A Mexican columns, it was published by Simon and Schuster in May. KCUR's Sylvia Maria Gross recently called him up at his office in Orange County, to ask the Mexican a few questions for herself.

Congress just eliminated federal funding for KCUR, but public radio is for the people.
