Kansas City, MO –

  • A new poll shows John McCain increasing his lead over Barack Obama in Missouri. Last month the Republican led by 3 points. This month he leads by ten. The Polling Company says voting along racial lines is a factor.
  • The Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese confirms it has approved a settlement in nearly 50 cases of abuse by clergy, and is issuing a public apology. The diocese will also ask that all perpetrators be defrocked.
  • A city council resolution that would force the mayor to "fire" his wife as a volunteer was debated in committee today. Mayor Funkhouser says it if passes he will ignore it.
  • The Teamsters union says it has negotiated a deal to save Interstate Bakeries Corp. The deal, involving investor Ripplewood Holdings, will let IBC emerge from bankruptcy.
  • The Kansas Lottery says it can not come to the rescue of the Woodlands, and has offered the best deal allowable under the law for operation of proposed slot machines.
