Women of Brewster Place at the Unicorn Theatre

Author Gloria Naylor began her award-winning novel The Women of Brewster Place while still a student at Yale. After winning the National Book Award for fiction in 1983, it was turned into a television movie 4 years later with the backing and starring power of Oprah Winfrey.By Steve Walker

Kansas City, MO – The story, which chronicles a group of African-American women linked by a neighborhood under siege, is now a musical that the Unicorn Theatre couldn't have foreseen opening just a month before the nation's first African-American president takes office. KCUR's Steve Walker reports.
