KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Most local schools and many businesses are closed because of the snow. Travel is still being discouraged in much of the Kansas City region. Drifting snow is the problem now.

In Kansas, for a second state day government offices in Topeka are closed... and now, a state of emergency is in effect for more than half the state. It's all the result of this week's winter storm.

The winter storm that's raking across the Midwest is also making life harder for exhausted ranchers whose cows are in the midst of giving birth.

KCUR prides ourselves on bringing local journalism to the public without a paywall — ever.

Our reporting will always be free for you to read. But it's not free to produce.

As a nonprofit, we rely on your donations to keep operating and trying new things. If you value our work, consider becoming a member.
