KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Among a pool of six, Sly James finished first in yesterday's primary for Kansas City mayor.

For the first time since the 1920s, Kansas City voters have denied an incumbent mayor a second term. Mark Funkhouser finished third and is unable to advance to the general election.

Yesterday's primaries also narrowed the field for council seats. Five races had more than two candidates.

A House committee is pushing for Kansas universities to consider privatizing many of their functions.
