Walker's Three to see: Win Win

KCUR Arts Reporter Steve Walker shares his top movie picks of the week.Marvelous new film from Tom McCarthy, director of The Station Agent and The Visitor. Paul Giamatti plays a struggling (economically and, soon enough, ethically) attorney in New Jersey whose family ends up semi-adopting a high school wrestling prodigy. A testament to the quality of the film is its cast: Amy Ryan as his wife; Bobby Cannavale and Jeffrey Tambor as his best buddies; Burt Young as a close client. And making an impressive film debut as Kyle, the teen athlete, is Alex Shafer (a real life wrestling phenom back in his home town). The movie is mostly very funny but slithers effortlessly - in the way of movies like Little Miss Sunshine - toward dark subjects, like the matter of Kyle's drug-abusing, opportunistic mother and her bull-headed attorney (well-played respectively by Melanie Linskey and Margo Martindale). What sounds like a predictable sports redemption movie isn't one at all. It's about real people making families from otherwise disconnected parties.
