Walker's Three to See: Poetry

KCUR Arts Reporter Steve Walker shares his top movie picks of the week.A beautifully executed film by South Korea's hottest filmmaker Chang-dong Lee. Like last year's marvelous Mother, its protagonist is a woman in her late sixties trying to find a little grace in a life rocked by chaos. In a flawless performance, Jeong-hie Yun plays Maji, an unsophisticated woman (who may or may not be slipping into dementia) raising her insolent grandson on a meager budget. When her grandson is accused of taking part in the group rape of a schoolmate, she attempts to ease the ugliness of her situation by taking a poetry class. The film juggles both stories with intense eloquence as we watch her struggle with the stark reality of her troubles juxtaposed with the abundant beauty all around her that she's taken for granted her whole life.
