Audio Postcard: Symphony In The Flint Hills

The 13th annual Symphony in the Flint Hills event took place on June 9 in Butler County. KMUW’s Ascha Lee files this Audio Postcard, featuring music from the Kansas City Symphony and voices from Gov. Jeff Colyer and special guest singer Aoife O’Donovan.

The crowd of Symphony guests watch the concert as the sun sets over the prairie. About 7,000 people attend the event each year.

Irish-American singer Aoife O'Donovan performs with the Kansas City Symphony during the concert. O'Donovan lead the audience in singing "Home on the Range" at sunset, a special tradition at the Symphony in the Flint Hills.

The sun sets on the prairie as volunteers on horseback ride in for the evening. The riders guard the outskirts of the site during the concert and play an important role in keeping the event safe.
