Blue Mondays at the Blue Room

Every Monday night, a jam session at the Blue Room draws a rambunctious crowd of genuine music-lovers, many of whom attend with religious devotion.

By Gina Kaufmann

Kansas City, MO – Some people who live in Kansas City see 18th and Vine as a tourist attraction, documenting the city?s jazz history, instead of a place that still pulses with life. But every Monday night, a jam session at the Blue Room draws a rambunctious crowd of genuine music-lovers, many of whom attend with religious devotion. They range from college students to husky-voiced jazz fans to neighborhood regulars stopping in for a drink. KCUR?s Gina Kaufmann went to a recent Blue Monday and sends us this audio postcard.

Congress just eliminated federal funding for KCUR, but public radio is for the people.

Your support has always made KCUR's work possible — from reporting that keeps officials accountable, to storytelling to connects our community. Help ensure the future of local journalism.
