KC Warms up for Al Green

Headlining the list of musicians for the Rhythm and Ribs Festival (June 16-18) is Al Green, his satin sound defining a new genre for soul music. Here's our own little preview of Rhythm and Ribs and a local tribute to the great Al Green.

By Laura Ziegler and Delores Jones

Kansas City, MO – After last year's success, the Rhythm and Ribs celebration is trying to establish itself as one of Kansas City's premier indigenous institutions, combining two of our city's richest traditions, music and barbeque. Some 30,000 people came to 18th and Vine last year with performances by more than 30 local and national jazz, blues, gospel and R&B bands. This year, the festival will be held over Father's Day Weekend.

I partner with communities to uncover the ignored or misrepresented stories by listening and letting communities help identify and shape a narrative. My work brings new voices, sounds, and an authentic sense of place to our coverage of the Kansas City region. My goal is to tell stories on the radio, online, on social media and through face to face conversations that enhance civic dialogue and provide solutions.
