Charlotte Street Foundation today announced its new executive director: Julie Gordon Dalgleish, a 30-year veteran of arts and cultural organizations and foundations.
The search started in 2012 after Charlotte Street's founder and co-director David Hughes announced he'd step down.
Hughes launched the organization in 1997. Since that time, it's grown from a fund for cash awards for Kansas City-based visual artists to include studio residencies, project grants, exhibition and performance programming, and more. When Hughes announced his decision, he said, "It feels like it's the right time to step back and make room for new leadership and the next phase of Charlotte Street's evolution."
In a release about the appointment of Dalgleish as executive director, Charlotte Street's board president Jon Taylor stated that "Julie’s expertise in organizational strategic planning and stakeholder engagement, knowledge of program and audience development, and connections to the national philanthropic community are invaluable additions to Charlotte Street’s leadership team."
Previously, Dalgleish served as principal consultant with Arts Development Associates (ADA), a Minnesota-based management consulting firm she's been affiliated with since 1985. In this capacity, she worked with arts and cultural organizations in 25 states, as well as Canada, New England, and New Zealand, to identify and address challenges and opportunities.
From 2006 to 2010, Dalgleish worked with the Archibald Bush Foundation in St. Paul, Minnesota. She led the organization through an expansion of the Foundation's artist fellowship program, which includes an awards program for North and South Dakota artists.
She's also co-authored a book, Waiting in the Wings: A Larger Audience for the Arts and How to Develop It.
Charlotte Street co-director Kate Hackman will transition to a new role as artistic director. She says she's "excited to delve even more deeply with artists, dig into programming, explore collaborations, and partner with Julie on Charlotte Street’s next phase of growth and impact."
Hughes plans to maintain ties to the organization, serving as director emeritus, and on the finance committee. He'll also "continue to be an ambassador and advocate for the organization nationally."
Dalgleish officially joins Charlotte Street Foundation on August 15.
