Kansas City, KS – A federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit by a group of Shawnee Mission Schools parents trying to raise more local money to counter Kansas cuts in education funds.
Seventeen parents failed to get an injunction that would've allowed them to step around a cap on property taxes for local schools.
Taking the issue to court was the only option to parent Michelle Trouve who talked with KCUR after Judge John W. Lungstrum heard the arguments and said, "we can hope that our legislature and our executive powers will help us out. Or a more probable scenario is the Shawnee Mission School District will lose more children to private schools."
The Kansas Governor and State Board of Education fought the local tax hike issue, arguing it would dilute the state's power to educate.
