Resistance to a possible sale of North Kansas City hospital has entered the legal arena. The hospital’s board of trustees filed a lawsuit yesterday, in an effort to stop the city from selling the place.
Dr. Michael Montgomery, chairman of the hospital’s board, says a sale isn’t in the interest of residents who voted to establish the place half a century ago.
“We feel like that we’re doing a good job, we’re maintaining a quality hospital and that we don’t need to be sold,” says Montgomery.
Montgomery believes the board, not the city council, owns the hospital, and that the city has no right to sell it.
Board trustees are appointed by the council for four year term periods. Montgomery has been on the board for fifteen years.
Last month, city leaders surprised hospital officials with news that it was studying a potential sale of the hospital.
The city has not issued a response to the legal challenge.
