Kansas City Public Schools May Close Buildings

Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) is getting ready to release its master plan, and it will almost certainly call for closing some schools and possibly cutting jobs.

In a news release, the district says the goal of the master plan is to ensure that limited resources are being used as effectively as possible.

What that means is that there is a very good chance the some buildings will be closed, boundaries will be moved and that some jobs will be lost. Attrition is more likely than layoffs.

In 2010, the district closed 28 schools, a move that stunned the community. A massive list of building closers is highly unlikely.

One of the schools the district will take a hard look at is the Southwest Early College Campus. The district and Academy Lafayette charter school tried to reach a deal to jointly run Southwest, but those talks fell apart in March.

The master plan will be made public next Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. at KCPS headquarters downtown.

The district has also scheduled several public meetings to hear from parents and patrons.

  • Wednesday, Nov. 11, 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Northeast Middle, 4904 Independence Ave. (North Area Schools: Anderson, Attucks, Garcia, Garfield, Gladstone, James, Wendell Phillips & Whittier elementary schools; Northeast Middle School; Lincoln Prep Academy & Northeast High School)
  • Saturday, Nov. 14, 9:00-11:00 a.m. at Paseo Academy, 4747 Flora Ave. (South Area Schools: AC Prep Lower, Banneker, Border Star, Hale Cook, Hartman, Holliday, Knotts, Paige & Troost elementary schools; AC Prep Upper, Paseo Academy & SWECC)
  • Saturday, Nov. 14, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Central Academy, 3221 Indiana Ave. (Central Area Schools: Carver, Faxon, FLA, King @ KCMSA, Longfellow & Melcher elementary schools; Central Middle School; Central Academy)
  • Monday, Nov. 16, 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Rogers Elementary, 6400 E 23rd St. (East Area Schools: Pitcher, Rogers, Trailwoods & Wheatley elementary schools; East High School)
