Grain storage costs have soared, putting Midwestern elevators and co-ops in a tough spot
Growing interest rates, high crop prices and rising transportation costs are making it more expensive to store grain — a critical step for many farmers. Economists and grain merchandisers say the market conditions leave them and farmers in an awkward place.
Kansas governor vetoes a huge tax relief plan, saying its flat tax favors the rich
Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly vetoed a plan for hundreds of millions of dollars in tax relief over her objection to a dramatic shift to a flat income tax rate. But her veto also halts two tax-relief proposals she championed.

Missouri governor’s plan for widening I-70 gets fully funded in proposed budget

The lawsuit alleges Missouri is wrongly depriving thousands of low-income residents access to food assistance and violating federal SNAP rules. It also argues that the state’s overburdened call center particularly affects those with disabilities.
Missouri governor and lawmakers have been removed from a plan to hike pay for state workers
Gov. Mike Parson asked lawmakers to approve an 8.7% pay hike, the biggest in living memory, to stem the loss of state workers to the private sector. But the Missouri House Budget Committee decided that neither the governor nor lawmakers should be included.
Missouri House Republicans push a $1 billion tax cut that would slice corporate rate in half
The GOP bill would cut Missouri's corporate income tax rate in half, cut the top rate on personal income taxes, and exempt Social Security payments from taxation. Democrats, however, said another cut — coming on top of a tax cut approved in September that has not been fully implemented — would put the state into a potentially precarious financial position.
Missouri Supreme Court won’t halt Kevin Johnson’s execution despite racial bias findings
A special prosecutor appointed by the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, which secured Johnson’s conviction, concluded that “racist prosecution techniques infected Mr. Johnson’s conviction and death sentence.” The Missouri Supreme Court on Monday denied motions to halt his execution, which is scheduled for Tuesday.
