Mr. Rothbart is a man exploring the events that have shaped him. In his newest work, My Heart is an Idiot he strikes up conversations with a 100 year old black man on a bus to buffalo, admits to having phone sex, plays tricks on his deaf mother and ended up naked in New York. His conclusion is that perhaps throughout these misadventures perhaps his heart has been an idiot.
Rothbart joins Jabulani this Thursday to discuss how his romanticism has lead him to heartbreak, but through the journey to those shattered dreams he has collected deep connections to people and places he never could have imagined. Perhaps a foolish heart leads straight to joy.
Davy Rothbart is the creator and editor of FOUND Magazine, a frequent contributor to public radio’s This American Life, and author of the story collection The Lone Surfer of Montana, Kansas. He writes regularly for GQ and Grantland; his work has been featured in The New Yorker and The New York Times; he's also twice been a guest on The Late Show with David Letterman. Rothbart is the director of two documentaries about the punk rock band Rise Against, as well as videos for Dan Savage's "It Gets Better" Project. In 2010, the film Easier With Practice, adapted from one of his GQ articles, and starring Brian Geraghty (The Hurt Locker), won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature. He is currently co-directing the documentary Medora, which has already received national attention from ESPN, Fox, and NBC's The Andrea Mitchell Show. He splits time between Los Angeles, California, and his hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
