Up To Date’s Indie, Foreign & Doc Critics’ ‘Three to See,’ September 16-18

Apple Corps

Has the upcoming election got you feeling burnt out already? Get some relief from the political smear ads of the small screen by watching a movie or two on the big one. This week's picks from Up To Date's indie, foreign and documentary film critics will make the decision of what to watch a little easier.

Cynthia Haines

The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years, Not rated

  • A documentary featuring music, interviews, and stories of the iconic rock band from 1963 until their break up in 1970.

Sully, PG-13

  • Tom Hanks plays pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger during and after his incredible emergency water landing of US Airlines Flight 1549 on the Hudson River.

Southside with You, PG-13

  • A love story chronicling the first date between Barack Obama, played by Parker Sawyers, and Michelle Robinson, played by Tika Sumpter.

Steve Walker

Hieronymus Bosch: Touched by the Devil, Not rated

  • A fascinating documentary that chronicles how the top Bosch experts compile an exhibition with the help of museums around the world, including the Nelson-Atkins.

Hell or High Water, PG-13

  • This film noir/modern Western hybrid about brothers who rob banks as payback for their disenfranchised friends and family is one of the best films this year.

Florence Foster Jenkins, R

  • It's not a surprise that Meryl Streep is technically and emotionally superb as the title character, a rich New York dilettante in the 1940's considered one of the worst singers ever recorded.
Since 1998, Steve Walker has contributed stories and interviews about theater, visual arts, and music as an arts reporter at KCUR. He's also one of Up to Date's regular trio of critics who discuss the latest in art, independent and documentary films playing on area screens.
