Beauticians Look for Domestic Violence

Kansas City, MO – The beauty shop, the hair salon, the nail place - they're all places you can let your hair down, and the gossip flows. In some cultures, clients can tell things to their hair dresser that they wouldn't tell anyone else. And many salon workers can see that their clients are in trouble. Kansas is starting a new program to train the 22,000 hair and nail professionals to spot signs of domestic abuse, so they can hand out information about where to get help.
But is it a job that cosmetologists really want to take on?

KCUR prides ourselves on bringing local journalism to the public without a paywall — ever.

Our reporting will always be free for you to read. But it's not free to produce.

As a nonprofit, we rely on your donations to keep operating and trying new things. If you value our work, consider becoming a member.
