Smoking Ban Task Force Proposed in KC

By Maria Carter

Kansas City, MO – A Kansas City council committee is putting any changes to the city's smoking ban on hold and is instead asking the Mayor to form a task force. KCUR's Maria Carter reports

Yesterday, Kansas City's Finance and Audit Committee heard recommendations for strengthening the city's smoking ban everything from posting warning signs to an outright ban for all restaurants, bars, and casinos. The committee heard from many local restaurants and bar owners who fear banning smoking will drive customers to establishments in neighboring communities, but they also received testimony from doctors and others concerned about public. Committee Chair Chuck Eddy says he supports the taskforce but says this is an important health issue that should be dealt with quickly.

EDDY: Unbelievable documented evidence we need to deal with that.

Recently, suburbs such as Overland Park, Olathe, and Lee's Summit have passed smoking bans that will apply to restaurants and bars.
