Kansas City, MO – Going to college is expensive, but some recent grads from Kansas City, Kansas have a whole lot of help. The Sumner Academy of Arts and Sciences'class of 2007 made district history when it racked up four million dollars in scholarships. KCUR's Ty Chandler talked with Principal Mary Viveros on the phone this week about how they made it happen.
Newsweek magazine ranked Sumner Academy in Kansas City Kansas one of the best schools in the country three years in a row. This year it came in at 118. But the Kansas City Kansas Public School District isn't satisfied with one top school. Spokesperson David Smith says they have set the bar high, and have found that the more they expect from their students, the better their students do.
