Anti-Abortion Groups Seek Grand Jury

By Maria Carter

Kansas City, MO – A coalition of anti-abortion groups is circulating a petition to convene another grand jury in Johnson County. In most states, it's the role of the judge to call a grand jury. But in Kansas, there's also the petition option. KCUR's Maria Carter reports.

The Life is for Everyone Coalition will soon be collecting signatures. The group wants a grand jury to look into whether Planned Parenthood is complying with Kansas laws on abortion. Operation Rescue is one of several groups the coalition. Spokeswoman Cheryl Sullenger says local police and prosecutors won't investigate what the group alleges are possible violations of state laws.

Sullenger: What we've decided to do is to exercise our rights as citizens in the state of Kansas and launch a grand jury investigation to get to the bottom of what's really going on over there.

The coalition hopes to gather some 5-thousand petition signatures. Only 3500 are needed to convene a grand jury. Planned Parenthood had no comment.
