Shawnee Mission, Kansas – The Shawnee Mission School district will begin the next school year with a new superintendent. Dr. Gene Johnson, associate superintendent, will take over for Dr. Marjorie Kaplan on July 1st.

Kaplan has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award from the Kansas PTA, but says that her greatest sense of accomplishment comes from the reputation for educational excellence the district has achieved. But it's time to leave, Kaplan says, for both personal and professional reasons.

Tomorrow during Morning Edition(May 1, 2008), hear an interview with Dr. Johnson.
