Kansas City, MO – The gifts are part of a national program called The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States. And 2,500 works will be distributed from the Vogel's private collection, started in the early 1960s by the New York based couple, a librarian and a postal worker, who devoted one salary to collecting art.
Steve Goddard is the Spencer Museum's senior curator of prints and drawings. Goddard says he's looking forward to adding more works on paper, including artist Richard Tuttle.
"He (Richard Tuttle) is someone who I've looked at in the past and wished that we could find something to do in the Spencer from Tuttle's work," says Goddard. "And this will be our first material by that artist, so we're very excited about that."
In Missouri, the institution selected to receive works from the Vogel collection is the Saint Louis Art Museum.
