Next month celebrates the 40th anniversary of the first walk on the Moon. While only 23 Americans have ever visited Earth's satellite- the last voyage over 36 years ago- the pictures and memories of those journeys still captivate us.
Steve Kraske talks with Andrew Chaikin about his latest book Voices From the Moon, considered the definitive history of the Apollo moon missions?arguably the pinnacle of human experience.
They discuss the 150 hours of one-on-one interviews Chaikin collected to tell the story of what it was really like to be in the lunar module and what it was like to see the Earth from space.
Voices of the Moon also includes 160 images taken from NASA's new high-resolution scans of the photos the astronauts took during the missions. Many of the photos, which are reproduced with stunning and unprecedented detail, have rarely?if ever?been seen by the general public.
