The Big Blue Whale, Catoosa, OK

What do you do when you want to get out of the house, but don't have the time or the money for a full-fledged vacation? Never fear, the Walt Bodine Show is here.

KCUR's Bill Anderson talks with a local travel writer about the best ways to hit the road--if only for a few hours--to see and experience new things in our area. Need a historical fix? I'm a sucker for any place with historic buildings and charm. Downtown Weston is one such town -- you can just imagine the streets lined with horse-drawn carriages and pioneers packing their wagons to head west. While you're there, go for a wine tasting at Pirtle.

Omaha is always a good weekend trip from KC. A Few weeks ago we went to the zoo, the bodies exhibit, and to see Beauty and the Beast with Broadway across America. What a great time!

flint hills. perfection.

Sara Jane Crane: A visit to Paxico, KS (about 20 minutes west of Topeka) is always enjoyable. The whole historic downtown is full of antique shops. Nearby Wamego is also a nice stop. It has a picturesque town park with a Dutch windmill, plus the Oz Museum is a lot of fun.

I did the tall grass prairie outside Pawhuska, OK. A 4 1/2 hour drive to get there, about 2 hours to drive through. There is a wonderful bunk house and the back of the prairie. The volunteers there tell you all about the history of the land. There are no fences and 4,000 head of Bison roam free. Pawhuska, Oklahoma is home to the FIRST Boy Scout in the United States. There is a small museum there, and all over town are numerous bronze statues. For Lunch you can't beat Bad Brad's BBQ bologna and big glass of sweet tea.

The area around Rocheport, Arrow Rock, Blackwater, MO is great - things to do, shops, restaurants, that wonderful small town feel.
