A newcomer upsets an education veteran for a spot on the Kansas City School Board, Cass County voters pass a half-cent sales tax to upgrade emergency dispatch systems, and more election results and headlines from KCUR.

Upset In Kansas City School Board Race

Kansas City School District voters have chosen a newcomer to the Board of Education, replacing a long time voice in local education. 35 year old Jon Hile won the 1st Subdistrict by defeating Arthur Benson II.  Hile collected 498 votes, Benson 377 in the district that represents school patrons from the downtown south past Country Club Plaza, state line to Troost.  Find out more here.

Results From Other Local Elections

Cass County voters narrowly approved a half cent sales tax to upgrade the emergency dispatch system.  Independence voters turn down a property tax increase to pay for more police.  A proposal from the Belton School District to transform the Freshman Center into the district’s high school got approval from voters.  Voters in Peculiar turned down a cent a gallon gas tax that would have paid for street improvements, and North Kansas City voters approved a sales tax levy to restore funding to libraries.  Find out more about the measures and the results here.

Workers’ Comp Bill Passes Missouri House

The Missouri Househas given first-round approval to another workers’ compensation billGovernor Jay Nixon(D) vetoedasimilar billlast month that originated in theSenate.  The House version contains most of the same provisions – it would bar employees from suing each other over workplace injuries and illnesses, and it would restore occupational disease claims within the workers’ comp system.  Read more here.

House Committee Supporting Lake Of The Ozarks Homeowners

A resolution voicing support for embattled homeownersat the Lake of the Ozarkswas passed unanimously Tuesday by a Missouri House committee.  Last year, theFederalEnergy Regulatory Commission(FERC) issued an order that more than 4,000 homes, decks and other structures along the Lake did not conform to Ameren Missouri’sland usage plan. he resolution calls for all parties involved to cooperate on a shoreline management plan that will respect the rights of Missouri property owners.   Find out more here.
