Concussion lawsuit filed against KC Chiefs
Five former Chiefs players sued the team over the long-term effects of football field concussions. Attorney Kenneth McClain said his clients won't get much relief under an earlier NFL settlement. McClain adds that the suit is possible because of a particular provision of Missouri law and that it is possible the St. Louis Rams will face a similar lawsuit
Sporting KC prepares for MLS soccer championship game
Sporting Kansas City was preparing for today's league championship game against Real Salt Lake. Coach Peter Vermes said it was easy to have mixed emotions about success coming down to one game when the team has an outstanding win-loss record in the past three years, but the team is enthusiastic and well-prepared for the game.
Chiefs edged in Denver rematch for third loss in a row
The Kansas City Chiefs, who started their season with 9 consecutive victories, lost their home-field rematch with Denver 35-28. Coach Andy Reid said the loss was disappointing, but the season is not over yet. With their present 9 and 3 record, the team is very likely for a wildcard playoff spot.
Death at Arrowhead ruled a homicide
The Chiefs loss was eclipsed a life lost at Arrowhead.Thirty-year-old Kyle VanWinkle died in a stadium parking lot. He apparently went to sleep in an unlocked vehicle very similar to the one he arrived in. The owner returned, there was an altercation. A witness said one bystander continued to punch VanWinkle after knocking him out. It's uncertain whether charges will be filed.
Missouri lawmakers offer Boeing $1.7 billion in tax breaks
The Missouri legislature met in a special session called by Gov. Jay Nixon in a rush to meet the deadline to submit a tax incentive package that might entice Boeing to manufacture its 777x in the state.The legislature approved offering Boeing tax incentives totaling up to $1.7 billion over 20 years. More than a dozen states, including Kansas are submitting bids.
Union Station out, parks board in as KC Museum manager
The Kansas City city council ended Union Station's management of the Museum, turning it over to the Parks Board, which manages a number of other cultural. Councilman Scott Wagner said it was a good deal for the city, the museum and the Northeast area. Most of the Museum's collection will still be owned by Union Station.
Move to block downtown drive-thrus stalled
A council committee split 2-2 on a move to stop construction of a drive-through Jimmy John's at 9th and Broadway. The company had already received approval from the parks board, and has spent more than $500,000 on the site. The proposal for a moratorium on all drive-through facilities downtown could come up for another vote when all 5 committee members are present.
City Hall evacuated for 5 hours in fake bomb threat
Just as a public hearing on the KCI Airport terminal was getting underway Tuesday morning, City Hall had to be evacuated because of a bomb threat. Five hours later it reopened after no bomb was found. The airport hearing that never got off the ground will be rescheduled.
