Turmoil, lawsuit over possible unaccredited KC schools transfers Green also noted that even though the district has patiently waited for the state to recognize its improved test scores, which would qualify it for provisional accreditation. Schools controversy spreads to calls for commissioner resignation, new laws Meanwhile State Sen. Nixon to appoint a state board member from the Kansas City area and said he has pre-filed a bill to protect the suburban districts from an overwhelming influx of transferees. Council Committee approves plans for 250-room Crossroads hotel A Kansas City city council committee endorsed a proposed $46 million Marriott hotel for the Crossroads district. Developer Rob Schaedle wasn't asking for financial help from the city because multiple studies had listed Kansas City as among the top five potential locations for a new hotel and the 16th and Baltimore location showed great promise for success. Group files petitions for election on future of KCI Airport A group called Friends of KCI turned in around 4,000 signatures on petitions demanding a public vote on future terminal plans at KCI Airport. Currently aviation department executives want a new single-terminal system, but some airlines and citizens' groups have opposed it because of potential costs. Wichita man buys into FBI airport-bombing sting The FBI charged a Wichita man, Terry Lee Loewen, with plotting to bomb the city's airport. FBI spokesman Michael Kaste said the plot was real and Loewen's intentions were real, but the the bomb wasn't real, though Loewen thought it was. The whole bombing scheme was an FBI sting. Sporting KC wins MSL title, Nielsen retires Sporting Kansas City won the Major League Soccer championship with a 1-point win in a shootout over Real Salt Lake. And two days later, popular goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen decided that was an appropriate note on which to announce his retirement. KC Chiefs back to winning after 3-loss streak Chiefs broke their 3-game losing streak. Coach Andy Reid said he was glad he had the team change their cleats for the icy field conditions. The Chiefs beat Washington 45-10. GSA move will be to Crown Center area The GSA ended its quest for a replacement for its Bannister Complex location, announcing it will move 900 employees to Two Pershing Square. Prominent businesswoman charged with $7 million tax scheme Executive Cheryl Womack was charged with evasion. The indictment accuses her of using Cayman Islands bank accounts and fake foreign trusts to hide $7 million. Missouri holds second execution, plans third Missouri executed convicted killer Allen Nicklasson. It was the second recent execution after three years of legal battles over execution protocols. Another man, Herbert Smully, is to be executed in January.
