Officials gathered Tuesday to mark the dedication of the $413 million Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts - and its new city-funded parking garage.

Kansas City, Mo. – Officials gathered Tuesday to mark the dedication of the $413 million Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts - and its new city-funded parking garage.
Kauffman Center Chairman of the Board Julia Irene Kauffman said the project was personal and close to her heart since its inception, nearly two decades ago. She credits the collaborative approach.
"From the conference rooms of City Hall to the board rooms of downtown, this partnership of public and private has formed a critical component of our success," said Kauffman.
The parking garage, on the south side of the Kauffman Center, is owned and operated by the city of Kansas City. Mayor Sly James described "Terpsichore for Kansas City," the sound and light piece slated for completion in October. It will greet visitors inside the garage.
"When you go down here, and you see this garage and it's in tune with the music," said James. "And there are red and white LED lights that dance to the music, you might never leave the garage (audience laughs)."
The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts opens on Friday, September 16, with gala events Friday and Saturday nights. An open house, free to the public, takes place on Sunday from 11 am - 5 pm (with performances starting at noon).
