KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Thirty eight times since the current school year started, fire alarms have been sounded for Southwest Early College Campus in Kansas City. Fourteen were actually fires. Today there were more.
Fire trucks swarmed on the Wornall Road, Old Southwest High School building. Fires burned in lockers, then later in a room stacked with paper. Most of the 14 fires before today were set by someone, says Battalion Fire Chief Joe Vitale. No one's been hurt in them. But as Vitale notes--" I think you can count on good fortune only so many times before that changes."
Investigators are studying cause of today's three fires. The building was hastily evacuated each time. The School district's Chief of Operations, Michael Rounds, calls the incidents " unfortunate."
