Kansas City, MO – New and certain renovated homes in Kansas City would have to meet more stringent security codes under a measure given first round approval by a city council committee today.
Intruders would find it harder to kick in a door and security lighting would be required in new homes and rehabbed houses where doors and door frames are replaced.
The Home Builders Association and police department gave the ordinance the nod in a Public Safety and Neighborhoods Committee hearing. George Schluter of the builders' group would rather the ordinance be expanded.
"It doesn't apply to apartments, and it doesn't apply to any existing homes," Schluter said.
The committee gave the measure preliminary approval, pending a full council vote.
