Kansas City, Mo. – Among a pool of six, Sly James finished first in yesterday's primary for Kansas City mayor. James, a longtime lawyer who's never held office, will face former council member Mike Burke in next month's election.
In his victory speech to a crowd of about 100 last night, James said he wants to keep a positive tone and focus the next four weeks on uniting Kansas City.
"I have a vision of what this city is about, but my vision doesn't really matter unless it's your vision as well," James said. "Together we'll create a vision we can all live with and promote: a city where there's jobs, a city where our children are being educated, a city where we have an efficient city government that provides the services that we need, a city where we have safe streets and quality lifestyles."
James was the first candidate to announce his challenge to current mayor Mark Funkhouser two years ago. He'll be running against Mike Burke in the March 22nd general election.
Funkhouser placed third in the primary election and is no longer in the race.
