The state of Kansas is withholding its final $2 million payment to 3M Co. for the new Department of Motor Vehicles computer system that caused massive delays, reports the Kansas City Star via the Associated Press.
The $40-million system's implementation in May resulted in a variety of problems, causing five, six and more than seven-hour wait times at many DMV offices.
The department is no longer experiencing the systemic problems, and according to Secretary of Revenue Nick Jordan, office wait times are “within one to four minutes on renewals now at the desk.”
Some employees at the Shawnee County offices continue to experience problems, reports the Topeka Capital-Journal, such as longer transaction times, more data to enter and smaller, harder-to-read font.
According to the Capital-Journal, the delays cost the state $560,000 in overtime payments to employees.
Jordan says the payment will be withheld until phase two of the update, which involves the installation of a new driver’s license processing system, is complete and bug-free, reports Kansas Public Radio’s Stephen Koranda.
