At least four inches of springtime snow will punctuate the Kansas City area weekend. And eight inches of heavy snow will be common in some areas of the metro.
The fact that rain is expected to shower the region Saturday afternoon, and only change over to snow around 10 p.m., may slightly reduce the amount that collects for shoveling, plowing, avoiding or enjoying.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch from Saturday night into Sunday and predicts significant snowfall.
This outlook is from National Weather Service Meteorologist Chris Bowman, who says 8 inches is not absolutely an outside limit, “it just depends on how quickly we are able to transition from rain over to snow. And right now it looks like the most likely scenario is for the rain to transition over to snow between the 10 o’clock and midnight time frame.”
Some of the snow will be heavy, says Bowman, beginning on the Northwest side and quickly covering the metro.
But he does not expect the piles of snow to linger. Bowman sees temperatures in the 40s next week and a quicker melting than from past storms.
