The original home of one of the few African-American divisions of the American Federation of Musicians, the Mutual Musicians Foundation has past and present officers embroiled in a legal dispute for control of the organization.

Segment 1: Control of venerable jazz institution to be decided in court.

Kansas City is home to three National Historic Landmarks, and an unassuming building near 18th and Vine is one of them. The Mutual Musicians Foundation has been a meeting place for jazz greats like Charlie Parker for more than a century and is known for its late-night jam sessions. We learned about its long musical history and what is behind the latest power struggle for the foundation.

  • Mark Davis, reporter for The Kansas City Star
  • Larry Kopitnik, Kansas City jazz historian

Segment 2: Two-time Newberry winner tries something new, a sequel.

Books like "Because of Winn Dixie" and "The Tales of Despereaux" have won their place in children's hearts and on the big screen. But throughout author Kate DiCamillo's' almost 20-year career, she has never written a sequel until now. Her new novel, "Louisiana's Way Home" reunites readers with the title character, a spunky 10-year-old first introduced in "Raymie Nightingale." DiCamillo talks about Louisiana's journey, her writing process and how she continues to create characters that resonate with young people.

Kate DiCamillo will speak on Friday, December 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library, 4801 Main St., Kansas City, Missouri, 64112. The event is at capacity and RSVPs are now closed.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
