A white male student at Shawnee Mission East High School was charged with aggravated battery after calling a Black female student the N-word and attacking her. A number of students walked out of class over the school's handling of the incident, and another protest is planned for Thursday.

Missouri Senate strikes deal to boost public-school funding in private-school tax-credit bill
MoScholars, the state's K-12 tax-credit scholarship program, is currently only available in charter counties and cities with at least 30,000 residents. A Missouri bill that advanced Tuesday would open the program statewide and increase the number of eligible families.
No zeros: Kansas City Public Schools has a new grading policy meant to improve equity
During the most recent school year, KCPS launched a different grading system where the minimum grade on any given assignment is 40% — even if the student didn’t do a single bit of it. It has drawn a mix of praise and criticism.

Missouri governor signs $468 million education bill that boosts teacher pay and expands charters
The bill would boost minimum teacher salaries from $25,000 to $40,000 a year. It also greatly expands Missouri's tax-credit scholarship program for K-12 students to attend private schools.
This Kansas City-area school is exchanging Swiftie friendship bracelets with a Bay Area class
Instead of making a Super Bowl bet, students at an Olathe elementary are exchanging friendship bracelets, a staple of Taylor Swift concerts, with an school in Santa Clara, California, the home of the 49ers.
This Kansas school has found a solution for negative behavior: Put kids to work
Woodman Elementary School in Wichita is experimenting with a program called Meaningful Work. Students who need extra attention are paired with an adult mentor and offered something constructive to do on a regular schedule, like feeding fish or making copies. So far, behavior problems are down and attendance is up.

Missouri schools may find out if their drinking water contains lead. Here's what's being done
The statewide effort to clean up drinking water was prompted by a 2022 Missouri law, and more than $27 million has been set aside to fix the problems.
