Kansas City’s mayor and city council gave themselves a 15% pay raise — their first in 4 years
Mayor Quinton Lucas, who was recently re-elected to another four-year term, will be paid $163,082 a year. Council members, who are considered part-time employees, increased their salaries to $81,538, although a majority of current members won't be sticking around to enjoy the bump.

Why Kansas City's police budget can be a mystery — even to the mayor
Voters throughout Missouri will see a constitutional amendment on the Nov. 8 ballot that would specifically require Kansas City to give 25% of its annual revenue to the KCPD, an increase of 5%. But because Kansas City lacks local control over its police, the city's elected officials have little say about how that money is spent.
As small apartment buildings face demolition, Kansas City loses affordable housing options
Hundreds of apartment complexes — those with less than 20 units — have disappeared from the Kansas City market as landlords decide it's cheaper to demolish than fix them up. But losing these buildings is a huge blow to the city's affordable housing stock.
