It’s easy to go online and try to diagnose yourself when you're sick, but what do doctors think about that?
On Thursday's Up to Date, pediatrician Dr. Natasha Burgert of Pediatric Associates of Kansas City and who Tweets @DoctorNatasha and writes a blog, kckidsdoc.com, talks with Steve Kraske about how doctors are using the world of blogs, social media and medical websites to communicate better with their patients.
We'll also speak with Children's Mercy Hospital infectious disease specialist Dr. Jason Newland and KU medical student Josh Herigon about medicine.io, their weekly podcast about the role of technology and social media in medicine, medical education, medical research, patient safety, and other related topics.
Dr. Natasha Burgert is a full-time pediatrician, blogger, and social media community manager. After completing an undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, she completed medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Following medical school, her pediatric training was at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio. She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Her husband is also a pediatrician, and they both joined a private practice in Kansas City in 2006. Follow her at @DoctorNatasha Dr. Jason Newland is director of the Antibiotic Stewardship Program and the Office of Evidence Base Practice at Children's Mercy Hospital. He is also an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. Josh Herigon is currently a third year medical student at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Prior to entering medical school, he spent 3 years conducting health services research in pediatrics, infectious diseases, and geriatrics. He is a graduate of Boston University’s School of Public Health where he studied epidemiology and refugee health.
