A Rival Who Became 'Indispensable'

William Seward may be famous for his "folly" of purchasing Alaska for the United States, but he also led the team of rivals Pres. Abraham Lincoln assembled to guide him in his administration.

In the second part of today's Up to Date we'll talk with Walter Stahr, author of Seward: Lincoln's Indispensable Man about what made the secretary of state so vital to the embattled president.

HEAR MORE: Walter Stahr will talk about his book Seward: Lincoln's Indispensable Man at 6:30 pm. Tuesday night at the Kansas City Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.

Walter Stahr is the author of John Jay: Founding Father, a biography of America’s first Supreme Court Chief Justice. He lives in Exeter, N.H.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers.
