Northland Symphony Orchestra's Got Game ... And Film Scores

Video game sound has evolved from the simple electronic theme music of Super Mario Bros. to the lush orchestral arrangements that accompany gamers' top choices today.  Recognizing the popularity of these games has inspired the musical selections for an upcoming concert by the Northland Symphony Orchestra.

The orchestra's conductor, Jim Murray, joins Steve Kraske to discuss those picks as well as some from popular sci-fi and fantasy films that audience members will enjoy.  They also talk about how smaller orchestras can co-exist in areas with major symphonies, and the musicians that make up the Northland Symphony Orchestra.

Guest: Jim Murray is in his 17th year as music director and conductor of the Northland Symphony Orchestra.

Hear More: The Northland Symphony Orchestra's Summer Pops Concert takes place Sunday, June 1, at 7:30 p.m. at Park Hill South High School.  Admission is free.

When I host Up To Date each morning at 9, my aim is to engage the community in conversations about the Kansas City area’s challenges, hopes and opportunities. I try to ask the questions that listeners want answered about the day’s most pressing issues and provide a place for residents to engage directly with newsmakers. Reach me at steve@kcur.org or on Twitter @stevekraske.
As senior producer of Up To Date, I want our listeners to hear familiar and new voices that shine light on the issues and challenges facing the myriad communities KCUR serves, and to expose our audiences to the wonderful and the creative in the Kansas City area. Just as important to me is an obligation to mentor the next generation of producers to ensure that the important conversations continue. Reach me at alexanderdk@kcur.org.
