Former 'Tonight Show' Bandleader Doc Severinsen Raves About Kansas City's Music Scene

He’s played with the likes of Kansas City-great Count Basie, though he’s best known for leading The Tonight Show band when Johnny Carson was hosting.

Doc Severinsen is back in Kansas City for a holiday performance with the Kansas City Symphony and chorus this weekend.

He spoke with Steve Kraske on Up To Date earlier this week, where they talked about his early careerand his time with The Tonight Show

But Severinsen wasn’t quite finished at the end of the interview.

After his appearance on Up To Date, Severinsen wanted to stick around to talk about one of our favorite subjects — Kansas City.

Severinsen was sincere about his appreciation of the development in the metro and the success of our sports teams, but he was really excited to talk about one thing — our music scene.

“This could be a world center for great jazz music rhythm and blues — the whole nine yards,” he told Kraske. “And you already have a world class symphony in a world class hall.”

He was duly impressed with the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

“It’s beyond incredible. The hall is world-class, to the ‘nth’ degree and it is a feast for the eyes before you even get inside.”

Of the thousands of halls that he’s performed in, Severinsen said ours ranks in the top three.

He said the last few days have brought back the familiar energy of the big-band days with Count Basie and Duke Ellington.

“When I come here, I feel that. It's in the air. It's still in the air and I just didn't want to leave here without commenting about what's going on with music in this town.”

We appreciate it, Doc.

Doc Severinsen performs with the Kansas City Symphony and Chorus at 8 p.m. Friday, December 11 at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. For tickets  and information, go to kcsymphony.org.
