Kansas City, Missouri – Longtime arts advocate Myra Morgan has been credited with laying the groundwork for today's thriving arts scene in Kansas City. Morgan passed away in May at the age of 67 after a long battle with lung cancer. Myra Morgan was born about 30 miles outside of Birmingham, Alabama, and moved to Kansas City with her husband Jim in the early 1960s. Her curatorial career spanned 35 years, from the Morgan Gallery - founded in 1969 in a one-car garage - to serving as director of the Belger Arts Center. One of Myra Morgan's passions was public art. KCUR's Laura Spencer talked to Jackson County Executive Katheryn Shields who worked closely with Morgan to revitalize Kansas City's one percent for art program.
A memorial service for Myra Morgan will be held Saturday, May 21 at 11 at the Belger Arts Center in the Crossroads Arts District.
