IRS Opens Center Near Union Station

By Maria Carter

Kansas City, MO – The Internal Revenue Service is set to open a new facility in Kansas City. KCUR's Maria Carter reports.

The new IRS campus is the biggest project in the downtown redevelopment boom, coming in at $370 million s and 1.1 million square feet of space. Located near Union station, the project includes a historic post office building, three annexes, and a warehouse. Employment at the IRS peaks during and shortly after tax season. When seasonal employment goes down from July to January parts of the building can be closed to save on utility costs. The development relies substantially on tax increment financing from the city and state. IRS commissioner Mark Everson and Senator Kit Bond will be on hand to dedicate the campus.
