Walker's Three to See: 50/50

KCUR's Steve Walker shares his top movie picks of the week.By Steve Walker

Kansas City, MO – This contemporary bittersweet comedy about a young NPR producer's battle with cancer succeeds at being both hilariously raunchy and beautifully moving. Will Reiser's clever script is autobiographical in that he received a cancer diagnosis in his twenties and his real best friend, actor Seth Rogan, shows up here as the best friend of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, taking on the Reiser role. Gordon-Levitt has grown into a terrific actor and he's charismatic and skillful here at capturing his character's rage, sadness, and warmth. There is nice supporting work as well from Anjelica Huston as his understandably hovering mother and Anna Kendrick as a psychiatric intern assigned his case. (Though she's out of her league, she finds herself head over heels in love with him.) Rogan is basically playing himself but he's very good at it and provides most of the film's earned laughs.
