Set in and around an evangelical Christian high school, the 2004 film "Saved" wasn't a huge box office hit. Since its opening, however, it has amassed a dedicated cult following.

Two years ago, a musical version premiered at New York's Playwrights Horizons, that developed such shows as "Sunday in the Park with George." Local directors decided to reconfigure "Saved." They chose to stage it at the Kansas City Rep, partly seduced by the kind of theater audiences one finds in the Midwest.

"Saved" opens this weekend at Kansas City Repertory Theater and runs through October 3rd.
