Cultural Issues Surround Boy Declared Brain Dead

By Kelley Weiss

Kansas City, MO – Michael Todd, a 14-year old African American boy declared brain dead after being shot in the neck last week was taken off life support Friday afternoon. Todd's mother, Cecelia Cole got a restraining order against the University of Kansas Hospital to prevent her son from being taken off life support. The family and hospital were headed to court to have a judge decide if Todd would remain on life support. But, after an independent doctor's consultation confirmed Todd's brain death diagnosis the family agreed to stop life support. David Moller, director of Medial Humanities at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Medical School, told KCUR's Kelley Weiss cultural factors came into play in this case.
